  • Our client in Environmental and climate resilience services is recruiting a Hydrologist. Qualified candidate will be responsible for supporting the design and priority localization of soil and water harvesting and conservation structures (e.g., check dams, infiltration trenches, contour bunds, water pans) in collaboration with the civil engineer.

    Duties and Responsibilities

    • Assist baseline survey, selection of beneficiaries, planning and data collection during inception phase and implementation of the project.
    • Conduct hydrological assessments and watershed assessments to identify areas with high runoff, erosion risk, and potential for improved water retention.
    • Support the design and priority localization of soil and water harvesting and conservation structures (e.g., check dams, infiltration trenches, contour bunds, water pans) in collaboration with the civil engineer.
    • Assess and advise on the best measure to be adopted depending on slope, nature of soil, crop coverage, presence, depth and width of gullies etc.
    • Analyze rainfall, runoff, sediment, and groundwater data to guide planning and evaluate the hydrological impact of interventions (data will be gathered in cooperation with a contractor). Assess and advise on best practices on rainwater harvesting and use, in cooperation with the agronomist.
    • Develop simple water balance analyses to estimate infiltration, storage, and flow dynamics under different land-use scenarios and apply to a hydrological model and guide decisions for implementation.
    • Work jointly with the agronomist to promote integrated land and water management practices, linking hydrological improvements with soil fertility, crop productivity, carbon storage and livelihood improvement.
    • Provide technical backstopping and on-site support in cooperation with the civil engineer during implementation to ensure structures and interventions meet hydrological design standards.
    • Preparation of technical reports on watershed performance, water balance, water harvesting based on data monitoring and collection (when necessary training ad hoc key person in the communities).
    • Facilitate capacity building of local communities and extension agents on water harvesting, erosion control, and sustainable watershed management practices.
    • Collaborate with County authorities, staff and agencies, community groups, and contractors to ensure participatory planning, ownership, and sustainability of water and land management measures.

    Qualification and skills

    • English and Swahili Language at advanced level
    • University degree in Hydrology, Water Resources Engineering, Environmental Science, or a closely related field
    • Excellent background in community-based approaches and programmes development
    • Sound knowledge of surface and subsurface hydrological processes in relation with prevailing conditions (soil coverage, slope, nature of soil), including rainfall–runoff relationships, infiltration dynamics, and soil–water interactions.
    • Proven experience in designing, supervising construction/rehabilitation and monitoring of soil and water conservation measures (e.g., check dams, infiltration pits, contour bunds, terraces, vegetative ridges).
    • Demonstrated capacity of data collection and to analysis of hydrological data (rainfall, runoff, sediment load, groundwater levels) and use the findings to design land and water management interventions (in cooperation with a contractor).
    • Familiarity with GIS and remote sensing tools for watershed delineation, mapping of the risk of erosion (in cooperation with a contractor).
    • Proven experience in integrating climate adaptation measures into natural resources management to reduce climate change impacts.
    • Strong ability to collaborate in multidisciplinary teams with engineers, agronomists, County staff and community facilitators to integrate natural resources protection with improved livelihood.
    • Good reporting, communication, and data visualization skills, including preparation of maps and technical sheets adapting when necessary to non-specialist audiences.
    • Familiar with facilitation and organization of workshops and delivery of training courses sessions.

    Professional experience

    • Minimum of 5 years of professional experience in watershed management, hydrological assessments, or catchment-based planning in rural or agricultural landscapes.

All applicants are advised to adhere to application guidelines for consideration. Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted.

NB: Flexi Personnel does not charge candidates for job placement.
