Our client, The African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) is a premier research-to-policy institution, generating evidence, strengthening research and related capacity in the African research and development ecosystem, and engaging policy to inform action on health and development. The Center is Africa-based and African-led, with its headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya, and a West Africa Regional Office (WARO), in Dakar, Senegal. APHRC seeks to drive change by developing strong African research leadership and promoting evidence informed decision-making (EIDM) across sub-Saharan Africa.
APHRC is seeking to fill the position of Head of Programs, to work for its regional office based in Dakar, Senegal. The job holder will be responsible for leading the design and development of research programs aligned with APHRC's objectives and mission. In addition, the individual will establish and implement strategies that foster synergy and collaboration across the Center’s programs.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Identify emerging trends, opportunities, and challenges in the research field and adjust program strategies accordingly.
- Work closely with program members to conceptualize, plan, and implement innovative programs.
- Assist in preparing regular progress reports for donors and the Center’s leadership
- Secure funding through grants, partnerships, and other avenues to support research initiatives.
- Supervise and lead a team of project managers and program support staff.
- Identify opportunities for interdisciplinary research and collaboration, and synergy with all units and programs in WARO and HQ
- Foster a collaborative and productive research environment, promoting teamwork, professional development, and strategic partnerships with external parties.
- Serve as a liaison between team members, facilitating effective communication and collaboration.
- Prepare and present regular reports on program achievements, challenges, and future plans to APHRC leadership.
- Support capacity development of APHRC partners and the enhancement of the research and development ecosystem in the region.
- Identify and communicate potential issues to higher-level management.
- Ensure that program activities comply with ethical standards, legal requirements, and regulatory guidelines.
- Oversee the development and implementation of policies related to research quality and integrity.
- Identify potential risks to research programs and develop strategies to mitigate those risks.
- Stay informed about changes in the regulatory environment and ensure programs are adjusted accordingly.
- Ensure the quality and integrity of research projects by implementing rigorous standards and methodologies.
Qualifications, skills, and experience
- A doctoral degree in a relevant field such as social sciences, public health, public policy or a related discipline. A combination of education and extensive professional experience may be considered.
- At least seven years of progressive leadership and management experience, preferably in a research or academic setting.
- Demonstrated ability to lead and inspire teams, manage resources effectively, and achieve strategic goals.
- Substantial experience and a proven track record in conducting and managing research projects.
- Strong strategic thinking and planning skills.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Experience in designing, developing, and implementing programs, particularly in research and/or research capacity strengthening or policy engagement.
- The capability to identify opportunities for innovation and collaboration within and outside APHRC.
- Experience in securing funding through grants, partnerships, and other avenues.
- Excellent interpersonal, organizational and time management skills with ability to meet tight deadlines.
- Ability to build and maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including researchers, funders, and community partners.
- Knowledge of ethical standards, research integrity, and compliance requirements.
- Effective communication skills to represent the Center to policymakers, donors, and the public.
- Capacity to establish and leverage professional networks for collaboration and partnership.
- Ability to make informed decisions and address challenges in a dynamic environment.
- Proactive and forward-thinking approach to leadership.
- A mindset for fostering innovation within programs.
- Excellent oral and written communication in English and French.
- Should have work experience in Francophone West Africa
