The African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) is an African-led and Africa based international research institute engaged in multidisciplinary, evidence-based policy research. Our researchers address important issues and challenges facing Africa in areas such as education, health, population, aging, urbanization and wellbeing. We engage with policymakers in the region to disseminate our research findings and influence policy decisions to improve the quality of life in Africa. 

 The AfriFOODlinks project aims to improve food environments for urban consumers, schools, and food retailers in Kisumu City through different experiments. The overall goal of this study is to improve household food security and children’s dietary intake and food safety in Kisumu City through implementation of innovative urban farming, food rescue, food safety and market upgrade interventions.

We seek to recruit a highly qualified and experienced Field Coordinator to support the project in coordinating field implementation activities and representing APHRC in the County AfriFOODlinks, health, nutrition and food system activities.

 Duties and responsibilities 


  • Establish and maintain partnerships with local authorities, community leaders, NGOs, and educational institutions for collaboration and support with the implementation of AfriFOODlinks interventions and other project activities.

  • Oversee project execution to ensure effective, timely and efficient implementation of interventions.

  • Coordinating field activities and providing oversight to the implementation partners and the community organized group.

  • Conduct regular field visits to monitor implementation activities, provide support to community organized groups, and consultants.

  • Prepare regular progress reports, highlighting challenges and achievements in implementation of interventions.

  • Actively engage with beneficiaries to document what is working and what is not working and work closely with consultants and implementers to incorporate changes where possible.

  • Maintain contacts with key stakeholders to increase synergies and represent APHRC in stakeholder engagements including engagements with AfriFOODlinks partners.

  • Act as a link between beneficiaries and the APHRC team.

  • Participate in recruitment, training and supervision of field interviewers during data collection.

  • Hold regular consultative sessions with the APHRC project team to clarify needs and asks, and provide feedback and updates during the assignment period.      

  • Support any AfriFOODlinks activities when called upon.

Minimum qualifications


  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Nutrition, Food Science, Public Health or related fields.

  • Proven working experience in implementing community-based food system/food environment/nutrition/public health or other closely related interventions including promotion/outreach activities and monitoring of implementation activities in informal settlements in Kisumu.

  • Proven experience in coordination/supervision of health and food systems interventions.

  • Demonstrated expertise in community and stakeholder engagement.

  • Experience in conducting field research and managing research projects and teams is an added advantage.

  • Computer literacy in Microsoft packages (Word, PowerPoint, and Excel)

  • Experience in report writing.

  • Resident of Kisumu City.

  • Fluent in English, Swahili and Dholuo is an added advantage (verbal and written)

  • Excellent interpersonal skills.

  • Be prepared to work full time on the project for the duration of the study.
