The African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) is a premier research-to-policy institution, generating evidence, strengthening research and related capacity in the African research and development ecosystem, and engaging policy to inform action on health and development. APHRC seeks to drive change by developing strong African research leadership and promoting evidence-informed decision-making (EIDM) across sub-Saharan Africa.
APHRC is implementing a research project, titled “Reducing Delays in Cancer Care in SSA”. Delays in cancer diagnosis and treatment are significant contributors to high cancer mortality in sub-Saharan Africa. These delays often stem from inadequate diagnosis and referral practices at the primary care level. This study aims to reduce delays in cancer diagnosis and treatment in Africa, where such delays contribute to high cancer-related deaths. The study focuses on using the Standardized Patients (SPs) method to assess healthcare providers' ability to recognize cancer symptoms and make appropriate referrals. SPs are trained to simulate real patients, allowing for assessment of healthcare providers diagnostic and referral practices. The goal is to create a validated tool to improve cancer diagnosis and referral practices, which will be part of a broader program to enhance clinical practices and provide training for healthcare providers in low- and middle-income countries.
APHRC seeks to recruit 23 qualified and experienced Quantitative Field Interviewers to conduct data collection across selected health facilities in Central Kenya.
