  • Our client, a global organization in the energy sector is setting up its offices in Kenya and is looking to recruit a Senior In-House Counsel to join their team in Kenya.

    JOB PURPOSE:

    This individual will be reporting directly to the Managing Director. They will lead the Legal function and serve as the principal legal advisor to the organization. The role is responsible for overseeing and managing all legal affairs, ensuring regulatory compliance, mitigating legal risks, and providing strategic legal guidance to support the organization's objectives and operations.

    ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Provide day-to-day legal advice to the organization on projects and operations, including renewable energy, public procurement, project finance, petroleum, corporate and commercial, employment, land and tenancy, environmental, civil, administrative, and carbon market matters.
    • Draft, review, negotiate, and advise on commercial agreements and project-related contracts, including power purchase, project finance, joint venture, licensing, EPC, supply, service, lease, distribution, transportation, and other commercial agreements.
    • Provide legal support across energy and infrastructure projects, including biofuels, geothermal energy, and carbon offset initiatives, ensuring regulatory and contractual compliance.
    • Support corporate governance and company secretarial matters and relevant internal functions.
    • Manage legal claims, disputes, settlements, and litigation-related matters, including the engagement and oversight of external legal counsel.
    • Maintain effective relationships with government authorities, regulators, and key industry stakeholders, providing legal and regulatory guidance on company activities.
    • Advise on and ensure compliance with occupational health and safety (OHS) legal requirements, including applicable OSHA standards, policies, and procedures.
    • Monitor developments in relevant legislation and regulations, advising management and business units on their potential impact and required actions.

    EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS & CAREER EXPERIENCE:

    • Bachelor’s degree in Law with strong academic performance and full qualification as a Kenyan Advocate of the High Court or equivalent qualification in a common-law jurisdiction.
    • Minimum 6 years’ post-qualification experience gained in a corporate legal environment and/or leading law firm.
    • Strong knowledge of commercial and administrative law, with practical experience advising businesses on complex legal matters.
    • Proven experience in projects, oil and gas, energy, renewable energy, or sustainable energy sectors.
    • Strong contract drafting, review, negotiation, and legal advisory skills.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English; proficiency in a second language is an added advantage.
    • Strong commercial acumen and business partnering skills, with the ability to work closely with business teams and build effective stakeholder relationships.
    • Self-motivated, proactive, and accountable, with the ability to work independently and collaboratively in a dynamic environment.
