VACANCY: QUALITATIVE AND QUANTITATIVE FIELD INTERVIEWERS

LOCATION: KARAMOJA, UGANDA

The African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) is a premier research-to- policy institution, generating evidence, strengthening research and related capacity in the African research and development ecosystem, and engaging policy to inform action on health and development. APHRC seeks to drive change by developing strong African research leadership and promoting evidence-informed decision-making (EIDM) across sub-Saharan Africa.

APHRC seeks to recruit qualified Qualitative and Quantitative Field Interviewers to support data collection for its WFP-Home Grown School Feeding Program (HGSFP) Project. This study aims to investigate the nutritional status of school children, comparing WFP-HGSFP-supported schools with non-supported schools; measure the nutritional composition of school meals; assess the acceptability and consumption of locally available and nutritious foods; and identify the barriers and facilitators to HGSFP implementation. Data collection is scheduled to take place in July-October 2026. Only applicants residing in the following districts in the Karamoja region (Abim, Amudat, Kaabong, Karenga, Kotido, Moroto, Nabilatuk, Nakapiripirit, Napak, and Karamoja) should apply.

Qualitative Field Interviewers

Duties and Responsibilities

• Identify and recruit participants who meet the eligibility criteria.
• Obtain and document informed consent from the study participants prior to the interviews.
• Facilitate in-depth interviews, key informant interviews, and observations with targeted participants, and ensure data collection is conducted in a neutral, ethical, and culturally sensitive manner.
• Submit all interviews within agreed timelines for cross-checking and verification by the supervisor.
• Support transcription and translation of interviews.
• Conduct participant observations at selected schools
• Take detailed notes during observations and interviews, and write observation reports for all the observations conducted daily.
• Attend field work debriefing meetings.
• Ensuring the safety of all assigned data collection tools and equipment.
• Any other related activity assigned by the supervisor or project manager during the contract period.

Person Specification (Qualifications and Experience)

• Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Sciences, Social Sciences, Public Health, Human Nutrition and dietetics, Food Science and Human Nutrition, and other related fields
• Previous experience working in similar fields.
• Ability to conduct observations and take detailed observation notes.
• Ability to facilitate interviews in fluent English, Luganda, Swahili, and local languages spoken in Karamoja.
• Must be fully available for training and during the entire data collection period.
• Excellent interpersonal, communication and interviewing skills.
• Resident of the Karamoja region (Abim, Amudat, Kaabong, Karenga, Kotido, Moroto, Nabilatuk, Nakapiripirit, Napak, and Karamoja).

Quantitative Field Interviewers

Duties and Responsibilities

• Commit to attending all days of training and data collection.
• Obtain and document informed consent from the study participants before the interviews.
• Conduct and appropriately record all the responses using digital survey tools
• Participate in daily debrief meetings.
• Be a custodian of the APHRC data collection equipment during field work.
• Observe safeguarding procedures throughout the data engagement.
• Perform other duties as may be assigned by the supervisor.

Person Specification (Qualifications and Experience)

• Minimum of a diploma in Environmental Sciences, Social Sciences, Public Health, Human Nutrition and dietetics, Food Science and Human Nutrition, and other related fields
• Post-secondary certificate, with a minimum grade of C plain.
• Experience in electronic data capture methods, such as survey CTO and devices like electronic digital recorders.
• Attention to detail to ensure the correctness of all data entered.
• Resident of the Karamoja region (Abim, Amudat, Kaabong, Karenga, Kotido, Moroto, Nabilatuk, Nakapiripirit, Napak, and Karamoja).
• Fluency in English, Luganda, Swahili, and the local language, with written and spoken proficiency as an added advantage.
• Be available to work full-time on the project for the duration of the study.
