  • Our client, Health Research Operations Kenya Limited (HROKL), the operating entity for the KEMRI Wellcome Trust Research Programme, a world class health research Programme based in Kenya, conducting multi-disciplinary research that spans infectious diseases, vaccines, maternal child and neonatal health, health systems, and emerging health threats. The Programme’s research leverages an integrated platform that includes bioscience laboratories, a clinical trials facility and clinical team, the clinical information network, the Kilifi demographic and health surveillance site, and robust community engagement, generating evidence that informs local and global health policy.

    HROKL is looking to recruit a technically proficient and agile Senior Software Developer to lead the software development lifecycle, mentor developers, and drive innovation.

    JOB PURPOSE:

    This individual will be responsible for overseeing the full software development lifecycle, mentoring junior developers, and driving innovation to ensure HROK IT applications remain up to date with emerging technologies. They will ensure the delivery of high-quality, secure, and efficient software solutions that align with the Programme’s IT strategy.

    KEY ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Lead the design, development, and integration of large or complex software solutions, ensuring alignment with programme needs and compatibility with existing systems.
    • Write high-quality, secure, and maintainable code, performing debugging, testing, and implementation following industry best practices.
    • Manage assigned software development projects, coordinating teams, setting timelines, and ensuring delivery within available resources.
    • Conduct regular code reviews, provide technical guidance, and ensure adherence to coding standards, security, and quality assurance protocols.
    • Mentor and coach junior software developers, providing guidance on best practices, technical skills, and professional development.
    • Conduct research on emerging technologies, tools, and frameworks, recommending innovative approaches to improve software development processes and IT efficiency.
    • Collaborate with IT teams, project managers, and stakeholders to understand requirements, provide solutions, and ensure software meets functional and non-functional specifications.
    • Develop user documentation, conduct training sessions, and provide technical support to staff to ensure effective adoption of applications.

    EDUCATION QUALIFICATIONS AND CAREER EXPERIENCE:

    • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information technology, or a related field from a recognized university. A master’s degree would be an added advantage.
    • Relevant IT certifications such as PHP ZCE, MCSD, MySQL, ITIL, AGILE, PRINCE2, CBAP, or PMP.
    • Knowledge of Software development languages e.g., PHP and Python.
    • Minimum of 5 years of overall experience in software development, including at least 3 years in a supervisory or team lead role.
    • Demonstrable experience managing complex, multidisciplinary IT projects.
