  • Our client in Environmental and climate resilience services is recruiting a Civil Engineer. Qualified candidate will be responsible for planning, organize, and supervise the implementation of soil and water conservation works landscaping, including ridges, contour ridges, semi-circular bunds, check dams, terraces, and water pans.

    Duties and Responsibilities

    • Assist baseline survey, selection of beneficiaries, planning and data collection in cooperation with the other team members.
    • Plan, organize, and supervise the implementation of soil and water conservation works landscaping, including ridges, contour ridges, semi-circular bunds, check dams, terraces, and water pans.
    • Assist and supervise contractors and/or train and supervise community working teams implementing runoff and erosion reduction measures.
    • Draft maintenance manuals for infrastructures built and/or rehabilitated for water and soil management.
    • Ensure technical quality and compliance with approved plans, designs, technical specifications, bills of quantities (BoQs), and environmental and safety standards during construction and rehabilitation works.
    • Provide technical guidance and on-site supervision to contractors, site foremen, and community groups engaged through cash-for-work/assets implementation modalities.
    • Support the preparation of work plans, BoQs, and technical drawings, and assist in tender evaluation and contractor and communities’ mobilization.
    • Monitor progress, verify quantities, and prepare technical reports (including best practices, challenges, and lessons learned), payment vouchers/clearances (in case of cash-for-work).
    • Engage with community representatives and local authorities so to ensure inclusiveness, ownership, and proper maintenance of the completed structures. Report and propose, when necessary, correction on the selection process of beneficiaries and specific initiatives/sites.
    • Ensure the application of environmental and social safeguards, PIC, gender sensitive focus, at all work sites/initiatives.
    • Contribute to capacity building and knowledge of community groups and local partners on sustainable land and water management techniques.
    • Participate in field assessments, surveys, and mapping contributing to prioritize beneficiaries/areas for interventions and monitor impact over time.

    Qualification and skills

    • English and Swahili Language at advanced level
    • BSc or advanced degree in Civil Engineer, Environment Engineer, Water Resources Engineer or related fields
    • Proven experience in cash-for-work/asset or labor-intensive community-based works implementation.
    • Proven experience in engaging with community leaders, training design and delivery, community mobilization.
    • Demonstrated experience in planning, supervising, and ensuring quality control of small-scale infrastructure (earth, stone and concrete) works implemented by contractors or community groups.
    • Familiar with hydrology, erosion control techniques, and watershed management principles, including sustainable land management practices (in cooperation with the Hydrologist and the agronomist).
    • Familiar with environmental and social safeguards and Prior Informed Consensus (PIC) approaches in community works.
    • Expert in data collection including use of digital tools (GIS, Kobo, Excel, etc.) and reporting.
    • Excellent teamwork, communication, and liaison skills with PM, local authorities, contractors, and community representatives.

    Professional experience

    • Minimum of 5 years of professional experience in supervising construction and rehabilitation of soil and water conservation structures (e.g.: contour ridges, demi-lunes, check dams, water pans).
