  • Our client in Environmental and climate resilience services is recruiting an Agronomist. Qualified candidate will be responsible for advising on the set-up and management of community nurseries, including seed selection, plantation and management of seedlings, certification, and commercialization

    Duties and Responsibilities

    • Assist baseline survey, selection of beneficiaries, planning and data collection during inception phase and implementation of the project.
    • Advising on the set-up and management of community nurseries, including seed selection, plantation and management of seedlings, certification, and commercialization
    • Promoting and supporting the establishment of forestry and agroforestry initiatives, control and best use of invasive species (Opuntia spp, Prosopis spp.), and contributing to the estimation of carbon removal assessment and potential values in the carbon market.
    • Contributing to research and knowledge management related to agroforestry practices.
    • Providing technical expertise and extension services in forestry, agroforestry enterprise value chains, invasive species, charcoal/briquets production, GHG reduction emissions to contribute to product development, value addition, and marketing.
    • Advising on sustainable and effective nurseries set up and management, agroforestry practices, including tree species composition and planting options, profitability analysis, market demand, financial options, etc.
    • Ensuring adherence with Kenian environmental legal framework and regulations in the implementation of agroforestry and carbon trade practices
    • Drafting reports and documents related to all agriculture related initiatives implemented under the action.

    Qualification and skills

    • English and Swahili Language at advanced level
    • BSc in Agricultural Sciences, Food Systems, Agricultural Economics, Forestry, Agroforestry or other related fields
    • Excellent background in community development
    • Facilitation skills for training of farmers and County staff, awareness and consensus building at community level, organization of workshops and interaction with contractors.
    • Proven experience in managing rangeland, rotational grazing, tree planning, nurseries set up and management, soil and water erosion.
    • Excellent communication skills as well as the capacity to drafting clear, complete and concise narrative technical reports.
    • Proven working experience in forestry, nursery, coffee, horticulture, fruticulture, agroforestry related initiatives.
    • Experience in value chain development for agricultural and/or non-timber forest products/nature-based supply chains.
    • Expert in agroecology practices and climate-smart technologies.
    • Experience in regenerative agriculture will be an asset.
    • Knowledge, understanding and practice of Carbon trade related projects will be an asset.

    Professional experience

    • Minimum experience of at least 5 years working on sustainable (soil, water and germplasm) agriculture projects.
