POSITION: TECHNICAL MANAGER – SOLAR & HYBRID SYSTEMS
LOCATION: NAIROBI, KENYA.
COMPENSATION: KES 70,000 – 150,000 (negotiable based on candidate experience and fitness for the job.)
Our client, a market leader of renewable energy solutions across East Africa, is looking for a driven and hands-on Technical Manager with strong technical knowledge in solar and hybrid systems.
JOB PURPOSE:
The role spans pre-sales, procurement/vendor evaluation, and project designs. The ideal candidate must combine deep system design expertise with excellent customer facing ability, a go-getter attitude, and the ability to solve real-time technical challenges on site.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Pre-Sales
- Create detailed solar simulations and energy yield studies using Helioscope, PVsyst, or equivalent tools.
- Prepare technical proposals, single-line diagrams, and system layouts.
- Attend client meetings and present technical solutions; assist sales with technical clarifications.
- Make cold calls and customer visits when required to support business development.
Procurement & Vendor Assessment
- Lead vendor assessment and pre-qualification processes (technical evaluation of vendors and products).
- Consolidate and evaluate vendor quotations.
- Prepare comparative procurement papers and purchase recommendation reports based on in-depth technical analysis (performance, warranties, reliability, total cost of ownership).
- Recommend preferred suppliers and support purchase negotiations.
Project Implementation
- Prepare detailed Bills of Quantities (BOQs), material take-offs, and technical specifications.
- Design string layouts, panel arrangements, cleaning systems, cable trays, and cable routes.
- Design and analyze upstream/downstream switchgear, load flow, and protection coordination.
- Troubleshoot real-time technical issues during execution and commissioning.
- Review and approve as-built drawings, ensuring compliance with standards and client requirements.
Hybrid / Battery Systems
- Design, size, and configure hybrid systems with battery storage, including inverter selection, control logic, and system integration.
- Provide recommendations on storage sizing, charge/discharge strategies, and system lifecycle optimization.
EDUCATION QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS:
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, renewable energy, or a related discipline.
- 3–5 years of hands-on experience in solar and hybrid system design and implementation.
- Proficiency in Helioscope / PVsyst, AutoCAD, and MS Oice 365 (Advanced Excel required).
- Strong PowerPoint skills for technical and commercial presentation preparation.
- Strong understanding of electrical switchgear, protection systems, and balance-of-system components.
- Proven experience in BOQ preparation, vendor evaluation, and technical purchase comparisons.
- Excellent customer-facing, communication and relationship building skills — presentable, articulate, and confident.
- Strong troubleshooting and on-site problem-solving capability.
- A go-getter with high ownership, attention to detail, and commitment to results.
- Willingness to travel for client visits and site supervision as required.
- Depth of technical knowledge in solar and hybrid systems.
- Strength in procurement & vendor evaluation (pre-qualification, quotation analysis, purchase comparison).
- Awareness of industry trends and emerging solar and storage technologies.
