Job Title: Project Coordinator – Rafiki Afya Project.
Duty Station: Kisumu, Kenya, with regular travel to project communities.
Project Overview.
The Rafiki Afya Project, implemented by CARE Kenya, Live Well, and Healthy Entrepreneurs (HE) in consortium, funded by Haleon through CARE International UK (CIUK), across the three target wards of Kisumu West Sub-County, Kisumu County, Kenya, trains CHPs to become Community health entrepreneurs (CHEs) who will sell everyday health products, and approved over the counter pain relief and hygiene products, while delivering trusted, MoH-approved health education to households on oral health, pain and fever management, and nutritional deficiencies.
The project combines measurable community health impact with a sustainable, income-generating business model for local entrepreneurs, and depends on strong coordination between government, professional bodies, suppliers, and community level teams.
Key Responsibilities
• Coordinate overall project implementation, developing workplans, activity schedules, and calendars; ensure activities meet approved plans, budgets, timelines, and quality standards; track milestones, risks, and dependencies.
• Coordinate recruitment, onboarding, and training (entrepreneurship, business, product knowledge, financial literacy) of CHEs; provide ongoing coaching and monthly mentorship on local health systems, screening techniques, and referral pathways to help CHEs progress through performance tiers; drive CHE retention (target: 90%+ active monthly).
• Maintain strong relationships with MoH, the Dental Association, Healthy Entrepreneurs (HE), CARE Kenya, CARE International UK (CIUK), Haleon, funders, suppliers, and local government; run monthly coordination meetings with CHEs and partners; prepare partner updates and represent the project in relevant forums; participate in the project's Technical Working Groups (Health Literacy & SBCC, Supply Chain, and MEAL) and in quarterly and annual partner review sessions.
• Provide day-to-day supervision, coaching, and performance management of the Project Assistant; delegate tasks, support development, and ensure accurate project record-keeping.
• Coordinate end-to-end supply chain — procurement, storage, distribution, in partnership with Healthy Entrepreneurs (HE), including the digital stock monitoring system for real-time sales tracking and stockout alerts (target: ≥85% of CHEs with no stockout in any calendar month); monitor stock and manage reconciliation; manage CHE consignment arrangements (target: 95% repayment within 90 days); mitigate stock-out, loss, and expiry risks.
• Monitor CHE sales, uptake, and household reach; review performance by cohort and tailor support strategies; prepare a fortnightly market intelligence report from monthly price surveys; support marketing activity to hit monthly sales targets.
• Ensure CHEs deliver accurate, MoH/Dental Association-approved health education on oral health, pain and fever management, and nutritional deficiencies; monitor quality and consistency; ensure CHEs understand referral boundaries and adverse-event reporting protocols
• Maintain systems tracking outputs, sales, training, and reach; prepare weekly/monthly/quarterly/donor reports; track KPIs via dashboards; document lessons learned and use data to inform decisions.
• Support budget preparation and expenditure tracking against workplans; flag budget risks promptly; contribute budget inputs to fundraising proposals.
• Identify and manage operational, supply chain, safeguarding, and reputational risks; ensure compliance with organisational, donor, and MoH requirements and applicable law; escalate significant issues promptly.
• Maintain accurate project records; prepare briefs, minutes, and progress updates; capture success stories; support communications activity with appropriate approvals (including consent for use of stories and photos by CARE International UK and Haleon).
Qualifications, Experience & Technical Skills
• Bachelor’s degree in public health, Business Administration, Development Studies, Social Sciences, or related field
• 3–5 years' project coordination/management experience, ideally in NGO, social enterprise, or development settings, including community health, entrepreneurship, or livelihoods programming and field team supervision
• Experience with government/health-sector partners; supply chain, distribution, or consumer product experience highly relevant
• Working knowledge of M&E principles, including designing or maintaining basic M&E tracking systems
• Strong project planning, data-driven reporting, supply chain/inventory literacy, sales/commercial tracking, MS Office proficiency, and budget-tracking skills
Other requirements:
• Commercially minded while committed to community health/social impact; strong interpersonal skills across government, partner, and community stakeholders; high integrity and accountability; solutions-oriented and resilient in a fast-paced, resource-constrained environment
• Direct line management of the Project Assistant with coaching and development support; indirect leadership/coaching of the CHE network; confident representing the project in partner and government forums
• Postgraduate qualification in a relevant field; prior oral health/FMCG/consumer health product experience; direct MoH or professional association partnership experience; familiarity with digital platforms (e.g., KOBO, ODOO, or the Rafiki Afya CHE digital data collection system); Kiswahili or local language fluency
• Regular travel within Kisumu and surrounding project communities for field activities, CHE coaching, market surveys, and stakeholder meetings; occasional travel to other project/partner locations. Occasional weekend/public holiday work may be required, with time off in lieu granted.
• Adhere to Live Well's Safeguarding Policy and Code of Conduct; ensure CHEs and staff follow safeguarding, ethics, and data protection requirements; report concerns promptly; comply with applicable Kenyan laws on product distribution and health messaging
• Valid driving licence required, with willingness to travel to remote project sites. Fluency in English required; Kiswahili and/or relevant local languages spoken in Kisumu an advantage.
